Chapter Fifteen

Lissandra watched as Denarrion’s whole body stiffened and wariness tightened his expression.

“This is Denny.”

Anger, disgust, and reluctance streamed down the bond from him, and she fisted her hands to keep from wrapping her arms around him. Who the hell can make him that unhappy?

She waited a little longer, hoping he’d give her an indication of what he heard on the phone, but the librarian for the Redfield Library began the list the winners for the storytelling competition.

“In second place, for her story of Why the Moon Winks, Ms. Sandy Charforest.”

What?

Lissandra gasped in surprise and shot a look at Denarrion. Unfortunately, he remained focused on his phone and whatever news he heard. She bit her lip but rose and made her way to the stage. Several people cheered for her and she waved in response.

“Congratulations, Ms. Charforest, you’ve won an Amazon.com gift card for fifty dollars.”

She took the little card from the librarian and nodded. “Thank you. It was fun.”

The applause continued as she made her way back through the crowd toward Denarrion, but some of her elation died at the frustration etched on his face. What had gone so wrong?

She paused a few feet away, trying to give him some privacy. She tucked the gift card into her pocket and let her gaze slide over the bright colors of the craft stalls. The day had been getting steadily better after their morning discussion, but his apprehension had returned the moment they bought the bracelet from the Morukai Shaman and his granddaughter. It only intensified after she offered the oral tale.

She shot a look at him and found him still frowning at the ground as he talked on the phone. She’d have to ask him if he understood what a gift they’d been given to receive the bracelet from a Speaker of the Goddess. She was sending them a message, though Lissandra couldn’t translate what it meant yet.

“Yeah, okay, we’ll be there.” Denarrion’s voice full of resignation made her turn. He swiped the phone and shook his head.

“Denarrion? Is everything all right?”

“Yeah, it’s fine.” He shrugged, his mouth tight. “They want us to come over for dinner by five.”

“Five?” She pulled her own phone out to check the time. “We have a little over two hours. That’s enough time, isn’t it?”

“Uh, yeah, I guess.” He nodded, but he didn’t sound convinced.

“Hey.” She tugged on his arm, turning him toward her. “It’s going to be fine. And the best part is, if we’re there earlier, we can be done earlier. Right?”

A tired smile curled his lips. “Yeah, that’s one way to look at it.”

“Tell you what. Once we get done with dinner, let’s take my Amazon gift card and do some online shopping.” She waved the little gift card as his smile broadened. “I won second place in the storytelling competition.” She tilted her head coyly. “Maybe we can find some fun ‘toys’ online.”

“Oh, yeah? What kind of toys did you have in mind?”

Before Lissandra could respond, a body hurled itself into Denarrion’s arms, clinging like a starfish.
